More than 400 people, seeking vocational skills and career opportunities attended a career fair organized by the Lagos Nigeria Self-Reliance Office of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Ikeja.
The annual event, tagged “Self-Reliance Career Fair”, has an objective to uplift the unemployed in Lagos and enhance entrepreneurial skills through basic training, workshops and field visits. The facilitators came from different careers in the business field to address the participants.

Elder Adeyinka Ojediran, an Area Seventy (senior leader) in the Africa West Area, encouraged the participants to utilize available opportunities around them and acquire adequate skills to generate more income.
“We have to encourage our youth and unemployed members of the Church to do something for themselves and fight poverty and unemployment from hindering their lives and homes,” said Elder Ojediran.
The Self-Reliance Specialist, Christian Onovughe, shared the perspective of the workshop and stated "Entrepreneurship can offer an alternative future for the youth and bring about the concrete possibility of economic empowerment to both youth and adults."
Asolukah Mcprosper of Rhoda Michaels Fashion School, emphasized the opportunities of entrepreneurship, availability of resources and identifying the right people. “This career fair will enhance the entrepreneurial skills in you," he said.
“We need to help participants achieve a strong foundation of basic skills and mindsets that support self-reliance," said Ero Hope Osauyi. "Skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, self confidence and motivation, will help you inprove and build entrepreneurial and technical skills.”
Rev. Father Fortunatus Okeke of Dominican Farms urged participants to utilize the opportunities presented by Lagos Self-Reliance Services of the Church to empower themselves economically. He said, "Agriculture remains one of the most viable alternatives to oil and agricultural investors can help to solve the problems of unemployment and hardship in Nigeria and abroad.".
Breakout sessions allowed participants to enjoy an interactive session with a facilitator of their choice, affording them a one-on-one session with the resource person.
