It was a day of celebration and excitement as LDS Charities, the humanitarian arm of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, handed over the renovated Ozalla Primary Heath Centre to the people of Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State on the 31st of March 2018.
President General of Ozalla-Okoroba, Mr. Igwe Tony described the Health Center’s state as “terrible and pathetic” before LDS Charities intervention. He said he could not find words enough to appreciate the Church for their humanitarian service. “I know that God will reward this Church and its members,” Tony said. “This is an example of true Christianity in action. There were times we would see people groaning in the dark because of lack of electricity and basic health facilities. Nurses used flashlights to conduct night time deliveries."
Mr. Tony continued, "That will be history now, due to the kind gesture of LDS Charities with the complete renovation, medical equipment and electricity generating set provided to the Health Centre.’’

Donated medical equipment included hospital beds, drug cupboards, an examination couch, maternity delivery bed, trolley, stretchers, centrifuge, glucometer, blood bank and oxygen concentrator.
Chimaroke Udeichi, the Nigeria Enugu Stake President who represented LDS Charities, stated that the project was part of efforts by the church to make positive impact in the lives of people.
Udeichi explained the major cause of maternal deaths in rural communities was hemorrhage, which might occur during and after child delivery, hence the decision to provide a blood bank and oxygen concentrator for the Centre. He, therefore, urged the members of the community to ensure constant blood donation to the facility to prevent maternal and child deaths.
Bright Vision Health Foundation (BVHF), a partner to LDS Charities on the project, trained the health workers of Ozalla Primary Health Centre on Essential New Born Care to help them build capacity in modern health practices.
The renovation and supply of medical equipment to the Ozalla community is one of many humanitarian projects carried out by LDS Charities in different communities in Nigeria.
